For Basalt Distillery the Giant’s Causeway, located in the Northen Ireland is at the heart of everything they do. This newly opened distillery sees their bottle, liquid and story all deeply rooted in the hexagonal shaped rocks formed millions of years ago. Distilling to Basalt is a blend of art and science, a balance of the rational and the emotive. They take their heritage and combine it with their understanding of the science of making gin.

This gin is impossibly complex, created with a long list of botanicals including juniper, coriander, angelica root, sweet orange peel, lemon peel, lemon verbana, sea buckthorn berries, kombu royale, tailed peppers, ginger, buckwheat, ginger and cassia.

At 50.1% ABV you just know you are in for a treat as soon as you pop open the bottle! There’s an initial wave of citrus, juniper and coastal notes that set the scene perfectly on the nose. To taste, we were blown away, with citrus bursting forth, followed by warm spices, ginger and cassia. These flavours give way to fresh sea inspired saltness, and if you were to taste this blind we would say it would be hard not to notice the coastal influences here. Peppery spice, enhanced by tailed pepper carries over on to the finish. All classic gins need a bite or pronounced finish to them that lingers, and this does not fail to disappoint delivering a satisfying three dimensional conclusion that will leave you wanting more.

What Makes This A Collector’s Edition Special?

Basalt have opted for a weighted screw cap in place of the traditional cork stopper, which for the first batch only comes with a raw silver cap as opposed to the black stoppers which will come on the standard bottles to signify Basalts beginnings. Finally, the front label is created from Zamac which is a metal instead of a printed label giving the bottle its premium feel. You will be able to find which number in the batch one your bottle is by checking the bottom righthand side of the back label.

Perfect Serve Recommendations 

Giant’s Basalt Rock Gin perfectly pairs with 200ml of either Fever-Tree Indian Tonic or Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic with a twist of orange peel and sprig of mint to garish.

Grapefruit Highball


  • 30ml Basalt Gin
  • 10ml Chamomile Tea Syrup
  • 5ml Bramble or Creme de Mure
  • Pink Grapefruit Soda
  • Grapefruit Wedge to Garnish

Chamomile Tea Syrup Method:

Place a chamomile tea bag in 100ml of boiling water and let it sit for 30mins. Then re-boil the water and 100 grams of syrup.


  1. Combine the gin, syrup and bramble or creme de mure in a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled highball glass.
  3. Stir gently and add the grapefruit wedge for garnish.

Bramble Negroni


  • 30ml Basalt Gin
  • 20ml Campari
  • 20ml Sweet Vermouth
  • 10ml Bramble Liqueur
  • Orange Zest Twist


  1. Stir all the ingredients in a tumbler with ice.
  2. Garnish with the orange twist.
